There have been many influences in my art, but the strongest have been the classic beauty of the Renaissance masters; Caravaggio, Rembrandt and Vermeer.
Called by the dramatic use of dark and light, I try to create images that are gentle, mysterious and eloquent. I have always been fascinated with the figure and showing the strength and subtlety of light falling on form. The figure is my primary subject. In addition, I have been painting the landscape and also combining landscape and figure together. Drawing is where I start my work. It is a chance to explore and know the subject and composition. The drawing will either be a sketch for a future painting or progress to a completed drawing. Just as music can reach deeply and touch an emotion, I am continually hopeful, that my paintings and drawings might capture that elusive moment that stirs the soul. |
