Dave Cornell began landscape painting while growing up in the hills of Northern California. There he studied under local artists, with training augmented by painting and sketching workshops. He continued to study art through his high school and college years, and in 1956 joined the U.S. Air Force. In 1963 he earned his Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering at Arizona State University through the Air Force advanced degree program.
Throughout Dave’s 31-year military career, he continued to sketch and paint at every opportunity, and broadened his artistic experience by studying the works of artists around the world. In 1987 he retired from the Air Force with the rank of Brigadier General, and began a second career in airport design and construction management. In the year 2000, he again retired and turned to landscape painting in earnest .
To learn more about painting, Dave attended workshops with plein air landscape painters in Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Illinois and Missouri. This program of advanced study helped him enter the mainstream of painting where he continues to paint for art shows, exhibits and commissions.
Dave was honored as “Artist of the Year” by the Gateway East Artists Guild in both 2006 and 2007. In 2007 he was judged “Best in Category” for oils and acrylics at the annual Art-In-The-Park Show in Highland Illinois. He is a founding member of the Missouri Plein Air Painter’s Association and is active in the Gateway East Artists Guild, Madison County Art Council, Highland Arts Council and the Northern Missouri Artist’s Association. Dave especially appreciates the beauty of landscapes to be found in Illinois and Missouri, and currently has an inventory of more than 100 paintings depicting local scenes.
His studio is located in his home in Lebanon, Illinois where he enjoys a full schedule of plein air and studio painting, teaching, and continued studies in the art of landscape painting.
