Plein Air painting is my favorite way to paint. I love being outdoors and seeing the beauty of nature first hand. I like the immediacy and the fresh quality of capturing a scene quickly, seeing the true colors of light and shadow, and giving my personal response to a scene. Each year I participate in 8-10 plein air events around the mid-west. Besides plein air painting, I also like to paint still life scenes that I set up in my studio. For me, there is no faster or better way to improve my craft than to paint frequently and to paint from life. My subject matter comes from things that inspire me such as color harmonies, strong light and shadow patterns, strong value contrasts, interesting shapes and much, much more. During the month of September 2016, I served as the Steelville Missouri Art Council's "Artist in Residence". During that month I painted a series of Waterscape Paintings, did 2 demonstrations for the high school art classes, and taught a Plein Air Workshop. The art council held an exhibition and sale for me at the end of the residency. It was a great learning opportunity for me and I felt I grew as an artist during this time. While primarily self-taught, in 2014 I began taking workshops from some nationally acclaimed artists like Roger Dale Brown, Scott Christensen, Shawn Cornell, John Lasater, and CW Mundy. I have had the pleasure of winning the following awards in the last 2 years: 2016 - Juries’ TOP 15% for “Forgotten Sunset” - Dec 2016, Bold Brush National Show; 2016 - Third Place for "Pleasant Alley", at the McKendree University 2016 Get Out & Paint Out; 2016 - Honorable Mention for "The Tucker Home", Steelville Plein Air Paint Out and Mentioned in Plein Air Magazine; 2016 - Honorable Mention for "Boat House", Callaway County Plein Air Paint Out; 2016 First Place in small works category for "Looking Across", White River Artists; 2016 - Honorable Mention for "Red Roof", White River Artists 2016 - Second Place for “Astors and Sumac”, The Rice Gallery’s Juried Plein Air Exhibition; 2015 - Brush Stroke Award, in the Fairfield, IL Plein Air Paint Out; 2015 - Second Place Award for “Summer Night” at Art House Gallery - August, 2015 Summer Show; 2015 - Juries’ Top 15% for “Snowy Afternoon” – Sept 2015, Bold Brush National Show; 2015 - Juries’ Top 15% for “Daniel Fishback Self-Portrait 2015” – May 2015, Bold Brush National Show; 2015 - Juries’ Top 15% for “Stream near Muny” – May 2015, Bold Brush National Show; 2015 - Juries’ Top 15% for “Colorado Dreaming” – Feb 2015, Bold Brush National Show; 2015 - Juries’ Top 15% for “Boats at Cassis Provence France” – Jan 2015, Bold Brush National Show My paintings are in corporate and private collections in the United States and Ireland.
